Welcome from the Director
Welcome to the new web site of the graduate program The Molecular Basis of Human Diseases (MBHD) of the University Of Crete Medical School. Our program was established in 2003 and offers high level education and research experience in the Molecular Basis of Human Diseases to both clinical and basic scientists. Being at the heart of disease-oriented medical research, the program provides outstanding opportunities for translational research in Greece and abroad. Past students of our program already hold positions in the academic, health or the industrial sector.
The program has been organized in accordance with international standards for graduate education and builds on the knowledge that has been acquired from the human genome project and the explosion in the "omics" fields during the past decades. Our staff are experienced teachers, with a wide range of research interests and expertise and strong publication record. In addition to faculty members from the University of Crete, FORTH and other academic/research centers in Greece, the program has created tight bonds with faculty from well-known Institutions in Europe and the US thus enabling selected students to pursue part of their studies abroad.
The program is based at the Medical School of the University of Crete and is located side-by-side to the 800 bed University Hospital of Heraklion and the Schools of Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science and Materials Science of the University of Crete and the Internationally known Foundation for Research and Technology of Hellas (FORTH). The proximity of these Institutions in the Voutes Campus brings a remarkable diversity of research opportunities facilitated by an outstanding faculty and state-of-the-art research facilities.
We are proud of the very positive evaluations that our program has received from students, faculty and the external evaluation committee who reviewd our program two times in the past (2006 and 2011). In our friendly department, you will receive plenty of support for your study and opportunities to mix with fellow students and members of staff.
Please explore our website to learn more about our program and we look forward to receiving your application.
Sincerely,
Dimitris Kardassis, PhD
Professor and Director of the Program
